Desc. : Guillaume Apollinaire enlisted in December 1916. On March 17th 1916 he was wounded in the temple by a piece of shrapnel. He died of Spanish flu on November 9th 1918. “ Dear all, dear wife and dear parents. Yes I am wounded. Let us hope it is not too serious. Bring up the children as best you can, dear Lucie. Leopold will help you in case I don't pull through. My thigh was crushed and I'm alone in this shell-hole. I think someone will soon help me out. My last thoughts are for you”.  Jean-Louis Gros, “ Paroles de Poilus”  He was wounded on April 16th 1917 and died after signing this letter, which was sent to his family by his comrades-in-arms. “ This is the moment when he has just been disemboweled by a bayonet coated in that army grease, when he can see, like a mortal delivery, his smoking bowels gushing from the hole in his belly; they want to try to live outside him, like a separate god. This is the moment when the piece of shrapnel has smashed his thigh and when he can see the luminous source of his femoral artery spring from amidst the mud of his body and when he can feel his mind slip into the slimy hands of this fountain. Suddenly, in the middle of the battle, this is his own personal drama.” , Jean Giono,
