Desc. : A syncretistic combination of Catholicism brought to Cuba by the Spanish "conquistadores" and the Yoruba cult introduced by African slaves, Santeria merges Orishas with Christian saints. Yemaya, a black goddess of the sea, is very much venerated. She symbolises motherhood, life and has a Christian counterpart, Nuestra Señora de Regla (Our Lady of Regla).
