When you live in a tropical, very hot and humid climate, open spaces like these Balconies is the first thing you put in the architectural plans of your building. Buildings with 'Baramdah' like these are all over India. In kolkata you would rarely see a Building or a house without them. For good reasons too. Where 250+ days a year are 95 F+ with 85+ percent humidity, Baramdah that extends out of your house is where you would escape to from the stuffy indoors, to catch that 'blessed breeze'. Kolkata has Buildings like these all over with beautifully ornate 'Baramdahs'. Balconies on this building have that wonderful cast iron grill work dating back many years. Again some of them may have wood or cement used for the detail work. This one has seen and endured a lot. Landmarks like these are inevitable targets of the current 'New Construction Boom' in the city. I am glad I am documenting this, chances are, next time I am in Kolkata, this one is gone and in its place stands a high-rise that cannibalized it. |
