It is a Mecca Allied landing in Normandy, June 6, 1944 at dawn. Arromanches is released on June 6 in the evening and on June 7, the first boats were sunk. On June 8, the first Phoenix caissons (concrete caissons hollow prefabricated in England and transported on landing) are immersed constituting an exceptional artificial harbor. On June 14, the first unloading begins. Fully operational at the beginning of July, the artificial harbor at Arromanches prove its worth during the great offensive Montgomery mid-July on Caen. For one week, more than 18,000 tons of goods will be unloaded every day. There remain many relics, including one which can be seen on the canvas to the left. Arromanches is behind the cliff represented. The view is taken from the area of the German batteries of Longues sur Mer, where you can see many bunkers and guns preserved for historical memory. |
