After eleven months of seat(siege), the starving city(estate) negotiates its surrender. Edouard III, tired and irritated by the long calaisienne resistance, accepts that six middle-class persons are delivered to him(her) to be executed. It is at this price(prize) that he(it) will leave the life to the inhabitants however forced to leave their city once English arrived. His wife Philippa de Hainaut succeeds however in persuading him(it) to save(spare) the life of these six unfortunates, desperate persons, come in front of the sovereign in shirt, the rope in the neck, the keys of the city and the castle in hands. By this gesture(movement) of love Christian, Edouard saves(spares) the life of Eustache de Saint Pierre and his five companions in misfortune in front of a queen in tears. Calais becomes English on August 3rd, 1347... |
