Chris Waller - Enter the gallery

When I feel the sudden and inexplicable urge to irritate someone who asks me if I play a musical instrument I reply: ‘I do: the paintbrush.’ Indeed, I find in abstract art a kind of visual music in which the variations of shapes, tone and colour act like the variations
of melody and harmony. The combinations of curved and straight lines are like
the combinations of major and minor keys. The analogy is far from perfect but
it is, I believe, possible – as Quevedo put it – to ‘hear with one’s eyes’.

I am influenced by a range or abstract art (Kandinski, Vieira da Silva, Bridget Rily, Piet Mondrian, etc.) Cubism, so-called decorative art, and Islamic art.
