Shaun Hall Raku
• I work mainly with slab built raku ceramics and work from home in Essex. I graduated in 1998 from Middlesex University and initially exhibited at Art in Clay, at Hatfield House and the Craft Potters' Association Shop in London. I sold my graduate work to Selfridges and Co at the New Designers' show at The Business Design Centre, also in London. Currently, I exhibit around East Anglia with work on display in many regional galleries. I regularly supply work to the Taplin Gallery in Woodbridge and the C21 shop in Mundesley. More recently I have work on display at the Wildwood Gallery, Bury St Edmunds, and just recently at the Buckenham Galleries, Southwold.
• I am very much influenced by architectural and sculptural form, and this has permeated through my ideas since University. This interest in form and shape lends itself to the "slab building" process. Coupled with this is an interest in the basic vessel form and the idea of inner and outer space or volume. A lot of my initial ideas were very much inspired by still life painting and abstracts along the lines of artists like William Scott and Braque. Consequently a lot of my pots have an illusionary or flattened sense of volume making them somewhat quirky.
• I make pots as mini- sculptural forms in their own right- they are not strictly functional and nor do I intend them to be
• I use Earthstone Handbuilding Clay which is fairly shock resistant, and then Raku fire the pots to around 1000 degrees centigrade. I use 2 basic Raku techniques involving glazing and copper slip. The irridescent surface of the work is obtained by applying a fuming slip which is based on a variation of John Wheeldon's. I fume the work on a bed of sawdust and smoke it under metal tins for about 20 minutes, letting in oxygen by lifting the smoking bin at appropriate intervals to allow the copper to gain irridescence. It is an elusive technique to master, and only now do I feel that I have some semblance of control. However the results I feel are well worth the risks involved and are often spectacular
I have recently exhibited at the Lennox Gallery in London, and will be showing at "Gallery Atelier sur Cour" in Paris this Christmas 08/09.
