Born in 1962 in Montreal (Canada), Pierre Poulin graduated from l’École Polytechnique. He worked in Montreal in engineering until 1999 and then, he moved to San Francisco (California) where he worked as an electro-optical engineer in the telecom industry. In 2003 he made a one year trip in South America then he lived in Lyon (France) for 3 years starting full time painting. In September 2006 he moved back to Montreal to devote himself to painting.
Very young, he draws the passers-by in the teeming of the city and people around him, then with time he has a passion for the artists from the dancing scene and the circus world. He also gets inspired by people met during his many travels and also by those from his own imagination.
Self taught, he has created and nourished his own style by making up universes where characters are both caricatures and fantasy.
Color and movement are two important elements of his work. He likes working in a dimension with spaces and proportions not always realistic. Feet, hands and also faces are often worked until the caricature, and movement is pushed to the limits of realism in the crossing of improbable plans
Pierre Poulin uses two medium to express his art: ink on watercolour or lavis paper (sometimes mixed with oil pastels or gouache) and oil on canvas.
