BIOGRAPHY

Difficult to depict this singular artist without oversimplification; his work is so rich and infused with imagination that it overspills categories.Born in Grenoble, France, in 1959, this self-taught son of an Italian emigrant discovered painting at the age of 13 and never looked back. Inspired by Modigliani, César and Picasso, he poured his creative impulse into multiple channels, working as a sculptor, a founder, a painter and draftsman, constantly exploring different paths to expression of his bubbling imagination. These included his invention of the so-called «Imhotep stone» process whereby an image is incrusted in stone. Twice international gold medalist for his bronzes in Saint Raphael in 1999 and the following year in San Remo, Robert Sgarra has received commissions from major French television channels, from the Cannes Film Festival and from other organizations seeking original artworks as trophies for events such as the World Chess Championship. Fired by total commitment to his art, he stalks his favorite subjects through different styles, gaining intensity through renewed familiarity. But whatever the style or medium, be it abstract or cubist, watercolor or sculpture, all his works have one point in common; they stir our emotions and exert the same fascination.
