Born in Saint-Adresse, near Le Havre, Laurent GREAUME, is a self-taught artist, as he himself admits, with a very open mind. He has no hesitation in creating some of his monumental works directly in front of visitors and art enthusiasts, with the intention of triggering off a discussion and providing a clearer expression of his new research, situated half way between the amusing and the abstract.
In his studio-gallery at Courseulles-sur-Mer, this artist, driven by a passion for shapes and colours, paints non-stop, composing an adventurous and somewhat contemporary world that matches with brilliance a naïve and humorous manner that can be misleading.
This is where Laurent GREAUME discovers and, above all, uses meticulous techniques to recompose his backgrounds by multiplying the pictorial layers with the aim of extracting astonishing nuances, in which the vital motifs of his work are superimposed.
And while on the subject of motifs, the artist, with his unlimited imagination, does not restrict himself to evoking cubism or a rigorous formality. His seemingly classical subjects in this respect are adorned with numerous delightful details that he brings to life in an unusual way by strongly affirming his personality and sources of inspiration.
His work is balanced in its concept and bold in the impact of its frequently warm colours, from which emerge multiple nuances, sparkling flashes of light, original or sinuous forms which the painter masters artfully with an appealing eloquence, through the continuous meaning of a powerful matter treated, without generally accepted ideas, by a genuine “expressionism” of the abstract.
