Quick access : A prioris A prioris-exhibition visit Universel Coming from Impressions Library Hate racism | ![]() After traditional secondary studies in Charleroi (a burden…), I turned to Plastic Arts. My formation started in 1993 to the “75” in Woluwe Saint Lambert (Brussels) and continued then at the “Institut Superior Saint Luc” in Liege. I supplemented it with evening classes in Artistic printing techniques (such as : serigraphy, lithography, engraving and offset) and trained myself in data processing. But the lack of freedom in the process of creation turned me away from the world of Graphic Arts for a more personal process… Which brought me to a pictorial experimentation and reflection and, after devoting myself during nearly 5 years to the development of an association dealing with young artists, led gradually to the work presented on this website. A prioris, introduction: The base of my work is the man. The man in itself, his appearance but also his behavior, his character, his attitudes and his reactions in every day life. His way of living and his relations with the others… By the means of portraits of children from different origins (the portrait becomes a tool and not an end in itself), I try to make people aware that we all are born identical. Indeed, boy or girl, European, Asian, or African, the differences are graphically blurred in order to induce the spectator in error and to then let speak his prejudices for him. That enables me to approach the topic of the a priori in our relations and more particularly how we look at the others. The female attitudes are used with an aim of causing a reaction: “these are portraits but wouldn't there be something more?” If one asks himself this question by looking at these faces, one realizes for a moment that not only are we observing them but they are observing us too… But then what can they be thinking while looking at us? |
