 Born on March 9, 1978 near Paris, Olivier FERMIN lives and works in Lyon (69 - France).
Although having followed a scientific university course, he has always bathed in an artistic universe, through exhibitions and other cultural activities in which he has always been interested. But it’s truly during his higher studies that he discovers social sciences, decisive ‘meeting’ which transformed him and led him to take a new direction, closer to his deep aspirations.
His engineering training, and his Architecture studies, related to his discovery of Social Sciences, made him consider the application of this knowledge to visual arts, at the same time as they moulded his relationship with the world which he questions in a very particular way, in particular in his photographic work.
Through a sensitive approach to this medium, he invites the public to wonder about external reality, to discover a new perception of this world which surrounds him; his work aims at bringing everyone to another form of self-awakening, in this environment on which he proposes to throw another glance.
His artistic work is nourished by a perpetual research. It’s done with much sensitivity, compassion, and sensuality, yet without fearing a sometimes provocative matter, which goal is to awake the conscience and to generate the debate, that he tries to approach to the human nature : man faced with himself, man in his relationship with the other, man facing his surrounding.
Through his artistic work, Olivier Fermin tries to reveal the share of humanity of each one of us and to understand the motivations which push us to act : to approach as much as possible the deep feelings and intimate forces which guide each man in his course of life, to try to catch the moment when each human reveals the touching being which is in him, caught up with his desires and fears, and so often imprisoned in his beliefs, principles and manners.
He tries to retranscribe his experiences, reflections and discoveries through art, to be able to communicate with the greatest number of people.
The choice of photography and video, perceived at first as the nearest reflection of reality, enables him to build new images of this reality, which challenge and touch the new universe which they generate.
His work requires as much, from the spectator, a reflexive approach as well as a contemplative attitude, in order to be able to seize all its depth.
