Quick access : dripworks fragmentation smoother abstracts rougher abstracts neotubist foreground background dialectic oddscapes | ![]() Born in Ipswich, UK (1971). Presently residing in Paris. Education: Language and Literature. In a society in which the Huckster is king, Mediocrity is the law and Profit is the god, in a society in which we are constantly reminded of the duty to buy, in a society in which we are obliged to squeeze our selves into the one size-suit of homo economicus, one needs to breath in order to survive. An art of quality, an art that eschews the gimmicks of the Huckster, an art that takes seriously the patience and the labour of the artisan is a means of grasping that precious gasp of the vital lifebreath of the imagination. That is the kind of art that interests me, the kind of art that I aspire to. I have painted since childhood and continue to paint whenever I can. Influences: a range of abstract art from Kandinsky to Vieire da Silva, Cubism, certain Surrealists, Op art, so-called ‘decorative’ art, art from Near, Middle and Far East. ‘A man with enough to live on would never leave home to go to sea or besiege some fortress or buy an office in the army… if he knew how to stay at home and enjoy himself’, Pascal.I find this quote apt because it is a reminder of the luck experienced by those for whom art is a means of travelling to unknown shores while remaining ‘at peace in one’s room’ (Pascal). Spectators are cordially invited on this visual voyage. About recent developments Recently I have been practising 'smoother abstraction'. This development has grown out of an interest in meditation; as is apparent in many of the titles. Some of these paintings could almost be said to veer towards a representation of thought processes during meditation. |
