 Monica BASSETT, Contemporary Artist
Monica was born in 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. She studied fashion, art and design at Northern Illinois University. She worked for a jewelry company in California before moving to France in 1994 when she began painting full time. After having explored techniques in watercolor and oil, she discovered acrylic to be most compatible with her personal vision of nature--full of energy, light, movement and rhythm. She also works as a free-lance designer for a US greeting card company.

Artist’s Statement I’ve always been connected to nature, landscape, and light. I love being out-of-doors and revel in each season. The theme of the tree is found throughout my paintings because this image allows me to feel what I need to paint. The tree symbolizes life and the journey of each one of us—ever changing and evolving, finding our place in the world and putting down roots.
Being in nature allows me space to feel free, to breathe deeply, to relax and to feel joy. When I paint I try to recapture this uninhibited feeling allowing my emotions to take me to a deeper understanding of myself. Capturing the color, balance and energy in nature is important in my semi-figurative work.
Painting is a form of meditation and I feel guided by a higher source. I try to make art that is balanced yet spontaneous and consider myself a partner in this process creating a special kind of dance together. Trusting the process and taking risks are essential to each painting. Each piece is some sort of reflection of me in my environment that tells its own tale. This story is enhanced and perhaps retold differently by the experiences of those who relate to it.
