Carl Aldana born in Guatemalla 1938 Painter Drawings are many things
and many things are drawings. Drawings I make have many roles. My
drawing can range from confused struggle to glib rendition but is
always very enriching entertainment. I love to draw. I use drawing to
explore, to mine and forge my visual notions, to edit and to confirm. A
drawing can be a rehearsal or it can be a full realization. In drawings
I can see how thorough, or how thin the information I have is. When I
draw I seek out situations that are rewarding and challenging. For
instance I love to draw figures. I use “Life drawing” to observe
figures and to try and understand them better through delineation. I
make family and friends pose for drawings. I love to look at them.
Drawing them affords me insights that are only available from sustained
observation. Periodically I draw just to exercise my skills. I seldom
take a drawing past being a sketch because I prefer to use color as the
narrative tool in my work. When I try to express a feeling, paint has
so much more color potential to realize that feeling. But to quote and
agree with my mentor, Dick Oden, “Drawing is an agreeable pastime".
